The long rainy season lasts from about themiddle of April until August, and the short rainy seasonthrough December and January. The birth-rate is the death-rate per 1000. HISTORY. The history of Guiana is interesting fromthe fact that it was one of the first countries in whichEnglishmen attempted to settle. The name is derived froman Indian word meaning water, which was given to theregion extending from the River Orinoco to the 1498, when on his third voyage, Columbus, after sighting.
