From the age ofseven years he had earned his own liveli-hood at railroad work, beginning as a waterboy in Ohio, and after the death of hisbrother, Patrick, he dro\e the latters to Cross Plains, he worked on the con-struction of the Chicago, Milwaukee &St. Paul Railroad between Madison andPrairie du Chien, and between Judah andMonroe, Wisconsin.
