Proceedings of the Royal Society of Queensland . le-likeprocesses, that these organs are chiefly composed of lightlystaining parenchyma (par.) surrounding a delicate centralstrand of vascular tissue (), and containing a fewscattered deeply-stained cells (c). Contrasting and alter-nating with the stipes and the style-like processes are thesegments of the hypogynous gland (hi, h2, hS), which staindeeply and consequently are conspicuous structures insection. We therefore conclude that the elongated organsreferred to by Longman and White as segments of thehypogynous gland are really aborted styles and that theirdevelopment has caused splitting of the hypogynous glandinto distinct segments. Early this 3*ear, one of us obtained typical flowers ofBuckinghamia celsissima from the Brisbane BotanicGardens, and sections for comparison were made. It Avillbe observed that the hypogynous gland (Fig. 2, h) is entireand semi annular in shape and that aborted styles are notpresent. 44 ABORTIVE STYLES IN BUCKIKGHAMIA CELSTSSIMA £±y?Cr\7:.
