Spotted hatchetfish (Gasteropelecus maculatus). X-ray of a section through a spotted hatchetfish, showing its skeleton. These tropical freshwater hatchetfish (family Gasteropelecidae) have deep convex bodies with well-developed muscles that control their elongated pectoral fins, allowing them to leap out of the water and glide for short distances. This specimen measures 8 centimetres in length.
