In the WestIndies it is highly esteemed by all classes, being eaten raw, as adessert, or formed into an excellent sweetmeat and jelly. Of the fruit of the Purple Guava, to which ours is so closelyrelated, Lindley remarks, The excellent flavor of its fruit, which is very like that of strawberries and cream, is far supe-rior to either P. pyriferum, jpomiferum, or polycarpon. remarks of the fruit of this species, that it is juicy, ofa consistence much like that of a strawberry, to which it bearssome resemblance in flavor. What the present species may become, when cultivated, re-mains to be proved; but in a genus so generally interesting fortheir fruit, the experiment is worth making when an opj)or-tunity may offer. Probably Dr. Baldwin found it growing nearor above New Smyrna, as he did not go much farther into theUlterior of East Florida. PLATE XXV. A branch of the natural size in fruit. PiXXVl.
