Engines fitted with the ordinary rigid bearings requireto be erected on a firm foundation, and to be kept in perfectline. If, by the settling of the foundation, or from anyother cause, they get out of line, heating, cutting, andthumping result. To obviate this, modern engines are oftenfitted with self-adjusting bearings throughout; this givesthe engine great flexibility and freedom from friction. The pillow-block has a spherical shell turned and fitted intothe spherically-bored pillow-block, thus allowing a slightangular motion in any direction.
