Bangor Cathedral (St Deiniol) and tower of main University Building on hillside behind Bangor Gwynedd North Wales UK
A church was founded on the site of what is now Bangor Cathedral around 525. According to tradition, the first bishop of Bangor, the church's founder, St Deiniol, was consecrated around 545. Nothing of the fabric of the original church now remains, with much of the present church dating from the 12th-14th centuries. The tower is believed to date from the 16th century. Sir George Gilbert Scott also supervised a programme of restoration beginning in 1868. The Cathedral is dedicated to St Deiniol. The Dioces of Bangor is one of six in the disestablished Anglican Church in Wales, along with St Asaph, St David's, Swansea & Brecon, Llandaff and Monmouth. The Main Arts Building of the University is the most prominent landmark in the city, and was completed in 1910, The University was founded in 1884 with financial support from local slate quarrymen who were keen to promote higher education. It has been known as Bangor University (in Welsh, Prifysgol Bangor) since 2007, when the University of Wales became a confederal rather than federal body. It was previously known as University College North Wales (UCNW).
