Triumphal Arch, Palace of the Tuileries


The view taken in 1828, shows the Triumphal Arch, Palace of the Tuileries built by Napoleon after the designs of Percier and Fontaine modeled on the arch of Septimus Severus for the triumphs of the Grand Army. Eight Corinthian columns of Languedoc marble is used with Italian griotta frieze. On the top are figures towards Place du Carrousel, a cirasier by Tannay, a dragoon by Corbet, a chasseur á cheval by Forcon and a a carabineer de ligne by Chennard. Towards the palace there is a grenadiere ligne by Dardel, a carabineer de ligne by Monlony, a cannonie by Bridan and a sapeur by Dumont. Surmounting the arch is a triumphal carriage of gilt lead by Lemot with horses taken from Place St Mark, Venice but these were returned to the Venetians. The image was drawn by B Ferry under the direction of A Pugin and engraved by Fenner Sears and Co.
