Both Hornemann and Schumacher must be con::sidered his pupils, the latter continued to receive much help from Vahlwho, in the preface of his Enumeratio, is called Professor magninominis Vahl, vir nominis immortalis botanicorum, illustrissimus. Heinrich Christian Schumacher (born 1757 at Gliickstadt, died1830 in Copenhagen) was a Copenhagen physician and had a largepractice. He was also professor at the University and a man of highstanding who held many public offices, so it is all the more praise*worthy that he, in his idle hours, has been able to collect and pre*pare so large a material of Phanerogams and Cryptogams as he his work, generally called Enltmer.\tio, he records 2189 plantsamong those 925 species of fungi. In the preface he writes that hehas, during 22 years, roved through the country adjacent to Copen*hague within about a 12 mile radius often accompanied by Vahl, whois called amicus svavissimus. Of course many of those species of M. Vahl. From an engraving. 16. C. F. Schumacher. From an engraving. fungi of Schumachers were new to science at that time, and hisEnumeratio is of great importance to mycology in general, as also tothe knowledge of the distribution of Danish fungi in particular. Noother work gives, at the same time, so much information in this respect until, 100 years later, Rostrlp published thesecond volume of his Vejledningi den dan*ske Flora (R 04 a). Rostrup is justified inmaintaining that the Enumeratio is anoriginal of high repute, and a critical revisalof Schumachers work would solve manyproplems. Several of the descriptions ofSchumachers are up to this day repeatedunaltered in manuals etc. without its beingquite known whether they are autonomousspecies which have never been found again,or unrecognizable descriptions of specieswhich are well known from other doubt some of both are to be found;it has also happened that younger authorshave wrongly identified
