The castle of Sagunto is a fortress located at the top of the hill that protects the city of Sagunto, in Valencia (Spain) Photo: Eduardo Manzana
The presence of the castle is as old as the origin of the city and already the Iberians established their first settlement (Arse). Traditionally it is spoken of the Roman castle, making with it reference to the civilization that more has marked this monument and where Saguntum was. However, there are few remains of Roman origin in the castle and it is a mosaic of cultures and civilizations (Iberians, Romans, Goths, Arabs). The fortress was used by French troops during the War of Independence at the beginning of the 19th century. It is divided into seven squares or independent venues: Almenara Square, Armas Square, Conejera Square, Ciudadela Square, Dos de Mayo Square, San Fernando Square and Estudiantes. Within the walls, which extend a kilometer along the mountain, in the Antiquarium Epigraphic can be seen a part of the most complete and significant epigraphic collection of the Iberian peninsula. The inscriptions pick up the most outstanding and remarkable aspects of the Saguntine society at different times. Very close to the north face of the walls is the Roman theater.
