Breast cancer treatment. Scar on the left side of the chest of a woman who has had a mastectomy operation to remove a cancerous breast. This is done to prevent the cancer from spreading to the rest of the body. Removal of a whole breast is usually only done if the cancer is large and well-established. If the cancer has been discovered in time, the treatment has a high success rate. The mastectomy is followed with a course of anti-cancer drugs and radiotherapy to prevent reoccurrence. Breast cancer is one of the most common causes of death in women. Regular scans and self-examinations help to ensure early detection of breast cancers.
