Denver, Diocese of (Denveriensis), a suffraganof the Archdiocese of Santa F6, erected in 1887 andcomprising the entire State of Colorado, an area of103,645 square miles. The first permanent civilizedsettlement within its borders was made in 1852, whena Spanish colony from New Mexico settled in what isnow the southern part of Colorado on the ConejosRiver, where they built the first church in 1858. The discovery of Benedictine College, Pueblo in 1858, near the site of the present city of Denver, soon brought a great increase of population from theEastern States. Mining camps and towns sprang upin great numbers throughout the whole Pikes Peakregion. This territory was then a part of the vicariateof Bishop Mi^ge of Leavenworth, and that prelate vis-ited Denver in 1860. Finding it practically impossi-ble to attend these distant missions, Bishop Miegesecured their transfer to the jurisdiction of the Bishopof Santa F6. Bishop Lamy sent his vicar-general,the Very Rev. Joseph P. Machebeuf, and a youngpriest. Rev. John B. Raverdy, to care for the miningregions and the new settlements. Father Machebeufhad spent eleven years in the missions of NorthernOhio, and ten years in similar work in New Mexicoand Arizona, and was thus admirably adapted for thework
