An island of peace and history that crates a contrast with the surrounding modern architecture and the symbols of a large city such as Chicago, is the south steeple at Old St. Patrick's Church. In the background is the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) the tallest building in the city. The church is just west of Chicago's Loop and is the oldest church in the city. It is one of very few structures that predates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, being built in 1854. It has been referenced as a cornerstone of Irish culture in the city. The church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States. It is also a historic Chicago landmark.
