Darkness enabled Soult towithdraw his right, with the excep-tion of 1900 prisoners, which, to-gether with 51 pieces of cannon,formed the trophies of this victory., Our total loss was as follows :—British and Portuguese killed andwounded — 2 general staff, 6 lieu-tenant-colonels, 4 majors, 44 cap-tains, 80 lieutenants, 42 ensigns,o stalT, 161 serjeants, 29 drummers,2320 rank and file. After this bat-tle, the French army retired intoanother entrenched camp under theprotection of Bayonne ; and out r~. DEATH AND BONAPARTE. 33 army took a position extending{ruin St. Pd to St. Jean de Luz, atwhich latter town head-quarters re-mained by the last advices ; heavy rains, and consequent inundationsand impassable roads, having ren-dered any forward movement im-practicable.
