Thomas Mellons grandfather, Archibald Mellon, be-came dissatisfied with the economic conditions in Ire-land, particularly in the instance of taxation, and dis-posing of his possessions, sailed to America in 1816, andfound a satisfactory farm near Murrysville in westernWestmoreland county. Pa., whither his son, Andrew Mel-lon, followed him two years later. Andrew Mellon mar-ried Rebecca Wauchob, whose ancestors emigrated from. ^/p<.Cry\^o^ c^.^^C^^^ BIOGRAPHICAL 129 Holland when the Prince of Orange came to the throneof England, the Wauchobs settling in the North of Ire-land in the vicinitj of the Mellons. Thomas Mellon wasborn five years before his parents left Ireland. The im-migrants at once sought the parents of Mr. Mellon,with whom they remained until the spring of the en-suing year, when a farm was bought in the vicinity andtheir career in America begun. Thomas Mellon received the rudiments of his educa-tion at the knee of his mother until he was old enoughto attend school, and later went to the WestmorelandAcademy, for one term, of which Thomas Gill was themost efficient principal. Mr. Gill was a most versatilegentleman, being .a fine Latin and Greek scholar andscientist, and competent to impart information to hispupils. This term kindled in young Mellon the desireto qualify himself for
