Pinned backbone. Coloured lateral X-ray of the pinned backbone of a 27-year-old recovering from a broken back. The front of the body is at right. The pins (white, lower centre) are being used to hold together the patient's broken L3 (lower back) vertebra as it heals. Broken vertebrae can lead to paralysis or death if the spinal cord is damaged, but if repaired and allowed to heal, recovery is usually complete.
