This William de Ypres was a Fleming, and was one ofKing Stephens Captains of mercenary soldiers. He wasnever created Earl of Kent by Stephen, and never held anyEnglish Earldom from him or his successor Henry , as INIr. Round pithily puts it, provided well forhis great and faithful follower by quartering him upon theCounty of Kent, not as its Earl, but as tenant of the ancientdemesne of
