Pleural effusion. Coloured X-ray angiogram of lung blood vessels (branching, light-coloured) and a pleural efflusion. The pleural efflusion is seen as a thin vertical line at lower left, bisecting the loop that is the catheter injecting a contrast medium into the lung blood vessels. The line marks the abnormal presence of fluid in the chest lung compartment (pleural cavity). Excessive build-up of fluid will cause compression of the lung and breathing difficulties. The condition may occur in pneumonia, heart failure and cancer. The fluid may need to be surgically drained. The surrounding ribs (green/blue) and spine (left) are seen.
