A high tech litter bin on the seafront in a Cornish town.
A “Big Belly” compactor bin on the seafront in the Cornish town of St Ives. The 6 bins have been installed on a 6 week trial during August and September 2015. They use solar-powered compactor technology to reduce the volume of deposited rubbish by up to 8 fold. When full the bin sends a wireless signal to the operators who then empty it. So far the trial is deemed a success with no rubbish accumulating around overflowing bins, which was a problem with traditional bins. It also reduces the seagull problem. The trial is being run by St Ives Business Improvement District.
