Plant pest research. Chemist inspecting a petri dish containing xylan, a component of the hemicellulose in plant cell walls. Bacteria that produce xylanase, an enzyme that breaks down xylan, were streaked onto the gel (blue) in the dish in a wavy pattern. The clear areas (wavy lines) show where the xylanase is degrading the xylan.
