I was always glad to accept his advice, as none of us know too much about the business and should take all the infor- mation we can obtain from brother florists. While working for Mr. Bommersbach, I had much funeral work to do, as he catered to the undertakers in outlying towns. This gave me a chance to make the acquaintance of the undertakers'and learn their wants. Ever since I had worked for florists it had been my ambition to some day own a store myself. But I decided that I would forget my ambition and stay with Mr. Bommersbach until he either sold out or retired. I had by this time be- come proficient in the art of making up designs and my work had given satis- faction. Last August Mr. Bommersbach sold his business and the minute I heard of the transaction I decided to open a store. So September 25, 1916, I started in business in Decatur. I have been suc- cessful and much of this success I at- tribute to the advice given me by my former employer. But I was not satisfied with one store and in February of this year I opened another shop in Monticello, 111., and I am well pleased with the outlook. Trade has been so good in the new store that I cannot keep enough good stock on hand. My customers buy it as fast as I can ship it in. This spring I am build- ing greenhouses at Monticello and aim to supply the people of that town with first-class flowers. I started in business with but $150 in the bank and in six months I have acquired two stores and will soon own my own greenhouses. I think that is a record hard to beat anywhere. I have conducted my business in the belief that people do not want low prices as much as they want the best flowers. Second-grade flowers do not make nice gifts and I have alw
