Soft Tortoises, too, and Edible Turtles are numerous inand on the coasts of various parts of America. Besides numerous Frogs and Toads, North America has severalpeculiar Amphibia. The Mexican Axolotl (32) is one of these, and livesin the Lake of Mexico. It is peculiar in being able to reproduce itselfwhen still furnished with gills, and this was thought to be the final state ;but in 1865 it was discovered that it sometimes changes very much,and loses its gills, changing into Amblystoma, a genus previously knownand not supposed to be closely relate
