ANATOMY, HEAD

Anatomical model showing the internal structures of an adult human head and neck (left lateral median cutaway view). The head skeleton (in beige) includes the skull bones and the facial architecture as well as the jaw bones and the teeth. The skull is made up of eight bones: two parietal bones (A), forming the sides and roof of the cranium, the frontal bone (B) making up the forehead and the upper part of the orbits (eye sockets), the ethmoid bone (D) located between the orbits and at the roof of the nose, the sphenoid (E) which forms the base of the skull, part of the orbital walls, and articulates with all the other skull bones, the occipital bone (F), forming the posterior wall and base of the skull, and two temporal bones (not visible here), which form the temples. The face is made up of 14 bones, including two nasal bones (C) which make up part of the bridge of the nose, two maxillae (G) which unite to form the upper jaw, the two palatine bones (H) which form the palate, the mandible, (J) forming the lower jaw, and the two inferior nasal conchae (C) which make up part of the nasal fossa wall. These bones form cavities called the paranasal sinuses which are connected to the nasal cavities and include the frontal sinus (a, in the frontal bone), and the sphenoid sinus (b, in the sphenoid bone). The ethmoid bone forms two bony processes on each side of the nasal septum, known as the middle and superior nasal conchae (a and b respectively). These three pair of nasal conchae serve to filter inhaled air and detect odor molecules. The hyoid bone (K) is located in the anterior part of the neck, between the mandible and the larynx. (For cerebral anatomy, see the caption of image no. 1140605, and for buccal and pharyngeal anatomy, see image no. 1140505.) The spinal column originates at the base of the skull with the first cervical vertebra (L), known as the Atlas, a ring-shaped bone which supports the head; the second cervical vertebra, known as the axis (M), has a
