Mexican Dancers in Colourful Embroidered Dress Dance with May Pole and Ribbons Merida en Domingo Yucatan Peninsula Mexico 2007

Every Sunday the centre of town is closed off to traffic between 9am and 9pm for the weekly fair Merida en Domingo. Zocalo Square fills with art and craft stalls celebrating the history and culture of the Mayan peoples, traditional white floral dresses and a variety of delicious foods. The local Youth Dance group perform tradional dances from the region, and some with a more European influence, such as the adapted May Pole dance. The whole event is free and widely enjoyed by local Meridians and tourists alike.
