A late 19th Century illustration of Spanish explorers descending the Mississippi River following the death of Hernando de Soto (1500-1542). A Spanish explorer and conquistador, he was best known for leading the first European expedition deep into the territory of the modern-day United States through Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and most likely Arkansas. He was the first European documented as having crossed the Mississippi River.
