A huge tarpaulin, suspended by a yard, was hungoutside the east window, completely darkening both it and thewhole chancel. Then all the paraffin lamps in the house werebrought in, lighted, and set behind the screen, on the floor, onseats, etc., where they would not show, cross-reflections beingavoided as far as possible. Thus the lectern, screen, and brazierwere illuminated by day-light, (from doorway, and west win-dow,) and the whole chancelby lamp-light. After an hoursexposure, the yard was let go,and down came the tarpaulin ;and a few seconds expos
