Acorn Street, Beacon Hill, Boston, Mass., USA

Acorn Street in Beacon Hill, Boston, Massachusetts, USA was named one of the most beautiful streets in the world by Architectural Digest Magazine. Built 200 years ago the street originally housed craftsmen and artisans but today is a location prized by wealthier people. One of the notable feature of the street is the gas lights. Until recently Boston’s 2,800 gas lamps were left to burn 24 hours a day - since that was cheaper than hiring people to light and extinguish the lights every day. The city’s gas lamps annually emit nearly 5,000 metric tons of greenhouse gasses, not counting methane, and other gasses, leaking from the aging network of pipes. Today Boston uses solar power to switch the flames on and off for some of the city’s gas lamps. But the longer term plan is to replace all the gas lights to LEDs, that mimic gas lamps, by 2050.
