The leveris the regulation Baldwin ratchet, but onthe stem, between the brackets, there is astiff-coiled spring, which is by ahand nut ; the tension of this spring tendsto open the throttle, and can be so adjustedthat the engineer can handle his valveeasily without jerking. On the stem out- -^. side of the first bracket, a coarse-pitchthread is cut, and a heavy, knurled brassnut is placed ; when the engineer leaveshis engine he can quickly run this nut upto the bracket and lock the throttle are sandbaxes in the back of thecab to use for backing up, provided, as theregular box is, with Leach air sand jets. The tires are secured on the drivers bjretaining rings ; but an improvement overthe Mansell pattern is that they are lippedinto the wheel center as well as the tire, therivets merely holding the ring in place. The engine and tender are painted RoyalBlue and gold-leafed to match the trainshauled, and look verv handsome.
