Educated at the Boston Latin School, AmherstCollege, and Lane Seminary, he took his first pas-torate at Lawrenceburg, Indiana, in 1837. In 1863,during the Civil War, he went abroad to makeknown to the people of England the merits of theFederal cause, at a time when they were blindlyfollowing political leaders who desired the dis-memberment of the American Union, and soughtpretexts for hostile intervention.
