9th century Carolingian Oratory, Germigny des Prés, La Loiret, France
The Oratory still standing today was built in 806 by Theodulf, bishop of Orleans and abbot and St Benoit. The square, four winged building, is constructed around a lantern tower. The half dome mosaic depicting the Ark of the Covenant consists of 130,000 glass bricks and dates back to the 9th century.
