Burt, Moses, one of the old Revolutionary patriots, was theson of Aaron Burt, of Northiield, Mass., a wholesale mer-chant there of whom the first settlers of Walpole used to pur-chase goods before a store was opened here. Moses was born inNorthiield, Feb. 14, 1756 and came to Walpole in 1775, withSamuel Wiers, and purchased what was then known as theChandler meadows. Aug. 14, 1777, when he and another manwere stooking wheat they heard the reports of cannon at thebattle of Bennington and they immediately left home for thescene of strife. (See narrative.) He enlisted in the army forthree months and when the time expired he returned to Wal-pole; but was soon drafted to serve nine months longer, whichterm he served out.
