Muhammad and Fountain of Paradise
According to Islamic beliefs, in Paradise there are two mighty trees, and at the foot of each is a fountain of the purest water. In this miniature by al Hariri, an Arabian scholar of Arabic language and literature and a government official who lived in the 13th century , one tree and fountain are shown. Muslims do not portray the facial features of the Prophet Muhammad and so he is shown here with his face covered by a veil. Also portrayed here, with their faces covered each by a veil, are Ali, Muhammad's cousin and fourth successor to the caliphate, and Ali's sons Hassan and Hussein.
