Central Paris. Satellite image of the area around the Louvre (centre left, on river), central Paris, France. North is at left. The Louvre is a former palace (formal gardens at lower left) that housed the French Royal family in the 18th century. It is now an art museum and gallery. The River Seine is to its right. The island (top centre) includes the Notre Dame cathedral (top right area of island), which dates from the 12th-13th century. The large Luxembourg Garden (centre right) is at right of the Luxembourg Palace (built 1615-20) where the French Senate sit. The area seen here is about 3 kilometres across.
