(See page 124) AN INTRODUCTION TO BURMA Just across the Bay of Bengal in India,its next-door neighbor, is Burma. It is verydifferent from India, not only as to thegeneral appearance of the country itself, butalso as regards the people, their manner ofliving, and the language spoken. That thisshould be so is really not hard to under-stand. Though joined by land to India in thenorth, Burma is separated from that countryby mountain ranges which are difficult tocross. This has left the country shut in andisolated from earliest times. • The pages ofIndian history are scarred by the records ofAlexander the Great and other invaders, andthe country and people have been influencedgreatly by these various conquerors, yetBurma has been sheltered. In later times these same protectingmountains have stood in the way of morepeaceful invaders, so
