Rufus Cole (1872-1966), US physician, in his laboratory. Cole qualified as a medical doctor at Johns Hopkins University in 1899. By 1908 he had risen to become director of the Rockefeller University Hospital, in New York City, USA. Advances made under his leadership included new treatments for bacterial pneumonia and tuberculosis. For the later work, he was awarded the Kober Medal in 1938. He was awarded honorary degrees from the University of Chicago and the National University of Ireland. Photographed in the period from around 1925 to 1935.
