Railway and locomotive engineering : a practical journal of railway motive power and rolling stock . and theirattachments balance each other exactly, the movement of the reversing screw is\cry easy, changes in the cut-off requir-ing little or no physical effort even whenthe engine is acting under the higheststeam pressure. This will be the morereadily understood when it is observedthat the radius bars with the reverse shafton opposite sides of its axial line arecaused to work adjacent to opposite endsof the links on opposite sides of thelocomotive, so that when the right handradius bar is at or near the top of theslot on the right hand link, the connec-tion of the left hand radius bar is cor-respondingly at or near the bottom ofthe left hand link. One motion, therefore,as we have already stated, balances theother without the use of any counter-balance spring. Fig. 5 shows elevation and plan viewsof the valve gear as assembled on thelocomotive, and it need not be pointedout that the connections are all easilyreached and capable of massive construc-tion, insuring durability, and may be. FIG. 5. ELEV.\TION .\ND PL.\N VIEWS OF THE YOUNG LOG OMOTIVE V.^LVE GEAR. from the valve precluding the necessityfor bull rings and followers, the valvebeing simply a light cylinder cast in onepiece of uniform thickness throughout, provided with suitable ports for admissionand with its periphery ground toaccurate finish. The knuckle attachment suring easy and long service and perfectaction, the ball thrust bearings securingperfect alignment and aiding in the easymanipulation. The operating rod is apipe universally jointed to the screw andthence to the operating rod, and controlledbv a hand wheel in the cab. The rod and readily rebushed and replaced in thecourse of inevitable wear. In adjusting thegear, with crossheads connected to pistonsand main rods disconnected, mark theguides to indicate the piston strikingpoints. Show a mark on the guides cen-tral between striking points.
