Witches' butter. Close-up of witches' butter (Tremella mesenterica) fungus growing on a dead branch. This edible fungus grows on dead twigs and branches. The fruiting body (yellow) is soft, gelatinous and translucent with brain-like lobes. The surface layer produces basidia which produce four spores that are released into the air (heterobasidiomycete).
