Monuments in Ashbourne Church, Derbyshire, England, UK, to Sir John Cockayne (d 1372) & his son Edmund (L) who died in 1403 at the Battle of Shrewsbury. Sir John wears a soft cap, short tunic, long hose & a mantle reaching to the lion at his feet. There is a purse at his belt. Edmund is dressed as a knight in chain mail covered by a surcoat bearing the emblem of a cock fowl. Hands in gauntlets held together in prayer, he sports a moustache & wears a pointed basinet helmet over his mail haulberk decorated with a shield. Couters protect his elbows, angels support his pillow. Stiff, full length recumbent effigies, Edmund's of local alabaster on a freestone chest tomb (altar tomb). Alabaster said to come from Chellaston, south of Derby, supplied by the firm of Robert Sutton & Thomas Prentys. Along with other family monuments, they lie in the Boothby Chapel in the north transept. Visble to the rear R in my photo are Sir John the younger, (d 1447) son of Edmund, beside his wife Jane Dabridgecourt.
