Prepatellar bursitis. View of the legs of a 63 year-old female patient with one swollen and inflamed knee (at right). This condition is known as housemaid's knee or prepatellar bursitis. The patient's left knee is normal. Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa (fluid- filled sac) that acts as a cushion over the kneecap. Such inflammation may result from injury, infection or rheumatoid synovitis. It causes pain & may also restrict movement in an adjacent joint. It is called \housemaid's knee\" because it is associated with kneeling while working. Prepatellar bursitis is treated through rest and possibly steroid injections."
