The latter is the supporter of life, the former has been called azote, from the Greek, to signify its unfitness for sup-porting animal lite. Nitrogen will combinewith oxygen in various proportions, hencethe mixture of the atmosphere has been cal-led mechanical, because it combines withoxygen in other proportions and forms nitricacid. Nitrogen gas may be obtained by equalweights of sulphur and iron filings made intoa paste with water, and placed in a shallowdish, floating on water, and a bell jar full otatmospheric air be inverted over it. In thecourse of a few days, it will be found that thewater has risen about one fifth way up thejar, the remaining gas being nearly pure ni-trogen—the oxygen having been all absorbedby the mixture. Nitrogen gas may be obtained from a pieceof lean flesn meat, beef for example, whichmay be put in a retort along with very dilutenitri
