The mound of Nimrud is asclearly defined as that of Khorsabad, which it resem-bles in the quadrangular form of its line of consecu-tive mounds. The great interest in these discoveries cetitres inthe inscriptions, illustrations, and sculptures foundin the courts, halls, and historical chambers of pal-aces and temples, the most important of which werefound in the mounds at Khorsabad, Kouyunjik, andNimrud. The inscriptions were found on slabs ofstone and marble, arranged against the walls; oncylinders of pottery, images, and on obelisks. Theseinscriptions are nearly all in cuneatic charactere,which are neither simple nor numerical figures, butalphabetical; and the inscriptions, like English wri-ting, read from left to right.
