The hydropathic family physician : a ready prescriber and hygienic adviser with reference to the nature, causes, prevention, and treatment of diseases, accidents, and casualties of every kind . he welllimb being a little uppermost, to prevent the broken one drawing up,as it tends to do (see fig. 177). The patient must be kept in this posi-tion long enough to allow the bone to heal, which will require aboutone month. Another method is to use a single splint, half an inch or more irthickness, three or four inches wide, and long enough to reach fromthe afmpit to an inch or two beyond the sole of the foot. The splinfM measured upon the sound limb, and a hole must be cut in it to givtroom for the outside of the ankle. The patient lies upon a bod as be Of Fractubes and Dislocations. 675 fore, the limb having been previously bandaged, and then the brokenlimb is to be drawn down and made to correspond to the sound one. Aroller is then applied from one end of the limb to the other, as alsotwo or three times about the trunk, to keep every thing in its properplace. (See fig. 178.) Some persons, however, can not endure thisstraight position. A better method is the following: Fig. ITT. a. FKACTUEED THIGH. Two pieces of hinged boards, of the right length, are made to formupon another board a double inclined plane. (See fig. 179.) Over this, the limbs are to rest. Some pegs are also inserted into the boards ateach side of the limb to keep it in place. The broken thigh is broughtclose to the sound one, and the knees and ankles are tied together withhandkerchiefs. Pads are used between the joints and upon the boards, according to the patients feelings of comfort. Short splints are thenused upon the thigh, according to the necessities of the case. Theseappliances must be used from thirty to forty days. In fractures of the leg—tibia and fibula—both bones being broken, itis an easy matter to distinguish injury; if the small one only is fractured,it is not always so easy to ascertai
