Menopausal uterine gland. Coloured scanning elect- ron micrograph (SEM) of the lining of a gland in a menopausal woman's uterus. The epithelial (lining) cells have long microvilli (yellow). Glands such as this are common in the stroma which supports the uterine lining (endometrium). In a fertile woman, the glands secrete glycogen, mucus and fats which provide an ideal environment for a developing embryo. The menopause is the end of the fertile period of a woman's life, caused by ceased production of the hormone oestrogen. Magnification: x1700 at 6x7cm size.
