Colon cancer due to genetic mutation, light micrograph. This specimen shows adenocarcinoma of the colon. Adenocarcinoma is a cancer of the glandular lining that is found in many different organs, including the digestive tract. Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers in North America and Western Europe. It is thought to be connected to a diet high in fat and low in fibre. This image shows the medullary type of colorectal adenocarcinoma, usually found in the caecum or right colon of female patients. It is composed of sheets of polygonal cells arranged in solid sheets or trabecular pattern. Another common feature is the presence of numerous lymphocytes. The cause is usually a defect in one of the DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes. This case was associated with loss of MLH1 gene activity.
