Years after, when cruel minded men made the watersof the placid Conestoga red with the blood of the Christian Indians,many of them fled, outcasts from their homes, to the city of BrotherlyLove, to seek and find protection among the followers of Maquon,as they termed Penn. In 1685, a meeting-house was erected at the south-west corner ofCentre Square, Philadelphia. This building was designed as a Statehouse, and market house, as well as the chief meeting-house. Anothermeeting-house was erected, in 1685, in Front above Arch Street. Thiswas intended to serve for Evening meetings, and the Centre Squareone for the Day meetings. In after years, when the house in PineStreet was erected, they called the Front Street building the NorthMeeting. In 1789, this structure was removed, and a meeting-houseerected in Keys Alley. In the year 1695, the fourth meeting-house ofthis Society was built, at the south east corner of Second and MarketStreets.
