Plaque, in Polish and Esperanto, commemorating the house where Dr Ludwik Zamenhof lived 1898-1915, 5 Zamenhofa Street, Warsaw


Commemorative plaque at 5 Zamenhofa Street, Warsaw, where the house once stood in which Dr Ludwik Zamenhof, inventor of the Esperanto language, lived and worked 1898-1915. The plaque, in both Polish and Esperanto, reads: 'In this place stood the house, where, in the years 1898-1915, lived and worked Dr Ludwik Zamenhof, founder of the Esperanto language. The plaque was embedded at the centenary of his birth. Warsaw, 1959.' Dr Ludwik Zamenhof was born in Bialystock, 15 December 1859. In those days, Poland was partitioned between Imperial Russia, Austro-Hungary and Prussia. In his youth, Zamenhof witnessed many quarrels between people speaking different languages and came to the conclusion a common language would ease tensions in the world. Zamenhof died in Warsaw, 14 April 1917. The plaque is inlaid in a wall of a post-war block of flats at 5 Zamenhofa Street.
