Ultrasound assessment of varicose veins. Ultrasound probe (centre) being passed over the calf muscle of a patient to assess the position and condition of varicose veins, prior to surgery. Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to build up an image of internal body structures. Here the scan is being used to locate varicose veins and where they connect to deep veins in the muscle. This is necessary so that the surgeon has an idea of which veins are affected and how much work will be needed to fix or remove them.
