APOLONIA NOWAKLives in the village of Kadzidło in the well-known Kurpie region of Poland. Like her mother and her grandmother before her, she has always been interested in the arts. Her paper-cuttings, crepe flowers, flowers made of feathers and traditional decorative Easter eggs have enriched many private collections and ethnographical museums in Poland as well as those in the Vatican, Washington and London. Apart from making paper-cuttings, she is also a gifted singer with a resonant, high-pitched, head registered, voice. Her preferred technique revolves around a kind of shouting within the chest register. She began to sing in 1960 in the Kurpianka ensemble in Kadzidło with which she has performed all over Europe. She has been working with the Ars Nova ensemble since 1992, recording CD’s and making archive tapes and films for Polish Radio and Television. Her work has been recognized with the Highest Folk Art Award of the Polish Ministry of Culture, the Kazimierz Golden Tower, the Oskar Kolberg Prize and the Polish Radio Award.
