Mare Crisium. Lunar surface centred on the Mare Crisium (the 'Sea of Crises'). Lunar maria are dark areas of basaltic plains on the Moon, formed by ancient volcanic eruptions. This lunar mare is in the Crisium basin, which formed in the Pre-Imbrian period (around to billion years ago). It is 555 kilometres across and is relatively flat. This image, taken from Souni, Cyprus, with a 356mm reflector, was obtained on 16 April 2013.
