It was therefore already practicallysettled as to the name, although the company did notformally adopt the designation until some time Lamb says that at the conference about a nameonly he, Swegles, Sturgis, and Mead were present, and thatafter the names of Richmond, Swcglesville, and Johnsvillewere proposed, he (Lamb) said, Call it St. Johns. replied, For some reasons I should be in favorof St. Johns, addinir, Amen, St. Johns let it JOHN SWEGLES. Allusion to the company suggests the explanationthat such was the collective title by which the associationof the village proprietors was by common consent was no incorporation, but there was a community ofproperty, and it was further agreed that each owner shouldbear his proportionate share of expenses and receive like-wise his due share of the gains.
